Visual Arguments of the movie trailers "Black Hawk Down" and "Saving Private Ryan"

Black Hawk Down is a movie based on a true story and war. The director of this movie shows that people are dying for food and other resources; also men at such a young age fight and risking their lives in the army to make a difference and/or to fight. In the trailer it shows people fighting for food and other needs to live. It also shows a team of men in the army that is willing to make a difference for the country and its people. The team gets stuck in Somalia because their chopper has been destroyed and now are in desperate need of help. The visual of this video assumes that the viewer knows about the army and how tough it is for people to deal with death. This trailer has sadness, aggressiveness, desire, and other emotions. It expresses panic and darkness when something goes wrong in the mission (when the chopper is shot down). The trailer shows that no matter what the people should look out for each other, and help a man when he is in pain.
The trailer for
Saving Private Ryan is also based on war. The trailer begins with a woman falling and it appears that she has lost someone close. Then it goes onto war from Private Ryan's perspective, and shows a man in need of help. It also shows Private Ryan crying from reading a letter showing that he misses his family. The trailer shows sadness throughout but also has some parts of happiness. As the trailer goes on into war and fighting the music is louder and is more fast paced. This trailer conveys what it is like to loose someone close in a war, and how to deal with it. Throughout the trailer when there is fighting it seems to be that it is occurring during dawn (when it is dark).
Both of the movie trailers deal with very similar emotions. They are also both related to war and how the team looked after one another. The main difference between the two movies is that
Black Hawk Down is based on a team that is stuck in Somalia and needs help getting out, and Saving Private Ryan is based mostly on a soldier (Private Ryan) not necessarily a team. Also Black Hawk Down is told from a team's perspective while Saving Private Ryan is told from Private Ryan's perspective. The audience for both movies are very similar also, because they both show the hardships of war.

  1. I think you made some good points in your posting. The fact that the director chose to have the battles take place at night may represent his view on war as a very dark event. Also, the soundtrack used is definitely important to give the scene a very fast-paced feeling. One thing I must disagree with though is that "Saving Private Ryan" is told from the single aspect of Private Ryan. A good portion of the movie is really told through Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) and his men.

  2. I also did my blog on “Black Hawk Down” and “Saving Private Ryan.” I liked how you pointed out that “people are fighting for food and other needs to live” because that was one of my points that I forgot to mention in my blog posting. The Somalians fighting each other for food brings out the insanity of the genocide in Somalia. The Somalians “fighting for food” scene is one of the first scenes in the trailer, and it brings out the craziness of the war as well as foreshadowing what the soldiers will face in the war. Overall, I agree with your opinion about the visual arguments presented on these trailers. I agree with your view on the music selected as well as appealing to the viewers through emotional appeal.
