Saving Private Ryan and black Hawk Down Analysis

The creator of the Black Hawk Down trailer does an excellent job of summing up the whole purpose of the movie. The trailer accurately depicts the real events that took place. A mission intended to capture a Somali Warlord turns into a rescue mission after the Somali Militia shot down two Black Hawk helicopters. The purpose of the creators was to inform many people of an important event in history that many people do not know and to show the huge sacrifices that many young men made to make a difference in the world.

Unlike the Black Hawk Down trailer, the only thing that shows the purpose of the movie Saving Private Ryan is the title. After seeing the preview for the film, the creators wanted to show the hardships that many young men faced. Saving Private Ryan for me was one of the most moving films of all time. I never knew how intense war was mentally until I saw this movie. The preview does a great job of promoting the heroes who fought and also the mental hardships they faced.

Both previews use very similar images throughout to send the message they intend. They show young men cowering behind anything they can find to try and avoid the bullets. These images are used to appeal to us emotionally, or pathos. By making us feel sympathetic towards the young soldiers, we will forever respect the sacrifices they made. These previews are different in the mood generated by the music playing. In Black Hawk Down, the music has a sad sound where the song in Saving Private Ryan sounds as if something good is happening. This could be because the movie is returning to theaters and the heroes of the story we all know are back. Either way, both previews have a strong emotional appeal and do an excellent job of conveying what the movie is all about.

  1. I agree to what you said about Saving Private Ryan and how it did little to convey the plot of the movie. This technique is also seen in the trailer for the movie W., which does little to inform the audience of the plot.

I do disagree, in part, to what was said about the music in Black Hawk Down, yes it did start off sad but that was only to build up to the suspenseful climax in the middle of the trailer. Ultimately, the music played a large role in conveying the emotional message of the movie, both the sad and the intense aspects were shown.
