Visual Argument of "27 Dresses" and "Sex and the City"

27 Dresses is a romantic comedy film. This movie talks about how a bride maid meets a guy that changes her living style and becomes a bride at the end. The preview of the movie shows busy life of the main actress, Katherine Heigl, being a bride maid in different kinds of wedding. Until she accidently meets the main actor, James Marsdem, an editor of newspaper. James interviews her and takes pictures of her 27 different dresses of bride maid. He also asks important questions to Katherine, “What do you want? Have you even thought about it?” At the end, Katherine is not a bride maid anymore. She puts on her 28th dresses of bride maid as a bride of James. When audiences watch the preview, it manipulates audiences to think that Katherine is a bride planning on her perfect wedding and going to get marry in the beginning. Later on, audiences will find out that she is just a organized, neat and perfect bride maid. The music of the preview is slow and makes people feel relaxing.

Sex and the City is also a romantic comedy film, and it is an adaptation of the novel and TV series with the same name. It talks about the friendship between four different women. These four women are brave to try different things and each have their different ideas and opinions, but they can still understand each other, and not criticize each other. The preview shows the audience that the friendship between women is important. It also manipulates audiences in a way to think that life is a fantasy. It is irony that at the end Sarah Jessica Parker tells the little girl that life is not wonderful as you think. There are scenes that four women all wear fashion designer’s clothes, and have relationships with men. The music of trailer in the beginning let audiences feel relaxing and happy. Gradually, it becomes fast and faster, kind of portray the life in the city is busy and complicated.

Both movies are romantic. They present life of modern people is busy. Music of both is similar, and full of fantasy. Both of them are colorful, and feminine. The majority of the audiences is towards women.

  1. I have to agree with most of this blog post. However, there is one thing I must disagree on. The music in 27 dresses, in my opinion, starts fast pace. The movie opens with her being a busy body trying to please everyone, especially the bride. The music also stay quite steady, this creates a sense of determination especially when the viewers finds out ,clearly, her dilemma.
The music in Sex in the City did start off slow, as you said. However, i don't agree with the pathos appeal that it ceated [relaxation]. In my opinion, the music created sensual feelings. The movie/trailer opens with sexy scenes of her and her husband, but once the main struggle opens up the music starts to pick up pace and eventually hits the high point when she realizes that her friends are all she really needs.

  2. I also noticed the distinctive color choices and music for both of these movie trailers. They were clearly marketing these movies towards a female audience. The music you mentioned from these trailers was very important. I also noticed the use of the color pink, especially in any text that appeared on screen. The pink was yet another hint to the audience the creators were trying to target this trailer towards. It really helped to set the mood for what these movies would really be like. I liked that you mentioned the irony in Sarah Jessica Parker telling the little girl that life is not always like a fairy tale when the four main characters are all beautiful and successful New Yorkers. It was a really good catch that I didn’t pick up on until I read it in your post. I just considered it comic relief at the end of the trailer. So I liked that you took it in a different way.

  3. First, Mingie and Katie, I am glad that you girls commented on my blog post. Thank you. I agree with Mingie that the music in 27 Dresses does not start with slow pace. Now when I go back to watch the trailers again and again, I do realize that the music in movie 27 Dresses does start with fast pace. The fast pace would make the audience get that she is a busy woman that live in a busy city. To Katie’s comment, I realize the color choices of both trailerS when I first watched both trailers. These two films are definitely toward the female audiences. And, pink is just like a girly color.
