Black Hawk Down Vs. Lions for Lambs

Both of my trailers, Black Hawk Down and Lions for Lambs, depict a fierce battle between American soldiers and a foreign enemy. However, both of these movies are being viewed from different perspectives created by the visuals throughout the trailer. Each trailer gives us visual arguments just in their own ways. Based on the trailers, Lions for Lambs is viewed through the eyes of “the man in the air conditioned room”, but Black Hawk Down is felt from the heroics displayed on the battlefield.

Throughout the Lions for Lambs trailer, there is a constant transition from the war to daily life that gives us an argument about who is controlling what. A newspaper showing the President’s approval rating gives us more details that the battle is not only on the battlefield, but also in the political world that may be controlling the war. These visuals give us arguments of facts and reason to believe that politics play a vital role in a war. If you closely pay attention to the colors in the trailer, the darker shades and dark colors are generally used when scenes from the war appear having a gloomy effect on the viewer. However, when it comes to viewing the politicians and anyone outside of the war the colors are brighter and vivid. These color schemes show how much of a struggle it is to be in the war than rather be the one looking down on it from another country.

From the being of the trailer for Black Hawk Down it immediately attacks the pathos aspects of the viewer. The first words “Based on an actual event” appear across the screen tell the audience already that this may be an emotional movie. Then immediately after that you see a man with no shirt on doing something with the dirt with a dark setting surrounding him. Within 5 seconds they have already used visuals to portray a sad feeling through most people’s hearts. Once the Americans appear, a heroic theme song beings to play and the bright colors illuminate the screen showing the good within the soldiers. Constantly in the trailer you see the screen split in half with a soldier on one side, and a scene on the other side. The purpose of this design is to show a possible hero that may save many lives in the future. After seeing the American flag in the background of one scene, you can clearly feel that this trailer is trying to showcase the joy from heroic acts of many soldiers at war. The visuals make you want to see how each of these soldiers became heroes in the movie and appreciate everything that the soldiers at war do for us at home.

  1. I thought this was a good synopsis of the trailers. I could clearly picture what the scenes were and how they were relevant to the assignment, if not more-so with the Black Hawk Down description. Your viewing of the coloured imagery in Lions for Lambs created a good definition of what a visual argument is. Very nice.

  2. This was overall a very good depiction of these two videos. I liked the observation in Lions for Lambs of the switching environments throughout. The approval ratings was a nice touch as well; I didn't notice that when I viewed the trailer. Also, the Black Hawk Down overview is dead on. Good job!
